Simplification or Complexification: Auxiliary Selection and Anti-agreement Effect in Brazilian Venetan
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper we discuss a change in the auxiliary selectional pattern of Brazilian Venetan, heritage Italo-Romance variety spoken southern Brazil. Venetan varieties display default form past participle constructions with postverbal subjects and fully agreeing preverbal subjects: is true both for homeland language, northern Italy, as well under analysis paper, A crucial difference emerges unaccusative constructions: while Italian uses same BE presence subjects, specialized agreement on participle, when are present. We argue that necessary resumption case lack agreement. The becomes, therefore, morphosyntactically more complex than non-heritage counterpart.

World Englishes between Simplification and Complexification
Let us turn to the latter, more far-reaching issue first, namely to the notions of complexity/ complexification vs. simplicity/simplification. These are currently widely debated notions in the study of language typology and language variation, as can be seen from recent book publications such as Kusters (2003), Dahl (2004), Miestamo/Sinnemäki/Karlsson (to appear 2008) or Gil/Trudgill/ Sampson (...
متن کاملAuxiliary selection in Chinese*
This paper argues that the distribution of the two Chinese aspectual auxiliaries -Ie and -zhe in the locative inversion construction is determined by the semantics of the event, in particular the interaction of lexical aspect (telicity and stativity) and agentivity. The -le/-zhe alternation shows a gradient effect similar to the selection of perfective auxiliaries in Romance and Germanic (Sorac...
متن کاملA Comparative Analysis of Simplification and Complexification in the Evolution of Neural Network Topologies
Approaches to evolving the architectures of artificial neural networks have involved incrementally adding topological features (complexification), removing features (simplification), or both. We will present a comparative study of these dynamics, focusing on the domains of XOR and Tic-Tac-Toe, using NEAT (NeuroEvolution of Augmenting Topologies) as the starting point. Experimental comparisons a...
متن کاملParameterized auxiliary selection
Auxiliary selection is paradoxical: categorical for some verb classes, indeterminate for others; inconsistent across languages; and misaligned with other diagnostics. After critiquing one solution to the paradox, the Auxiliary Selection Hierarchy (Sorace 2000), we propose an alternative: Parameterized Linking, which approaches the semantic underpinnings of the unaccusative/unergative distinctio...
متن کاملA Note on Complex Predicate Formation: Evidence from Auxiliary Selection, Re exivization, and Past Participle Agreement in French and Italian
French and Italian confront us with an interesting puzzle in the analysis of complex predicates. In both languages we nd constructions { involving e.g. causative verbs and so{called restructuring verbs (in Italian 2 ) { for which various authors have motivated an analysis in terms of complex predicate formation. 3 The most compelling criterion in support of this analysis is (object) clitic clim...
